Busy week for Shildon’s athletes

Shildon’s young athletes have had a busy few weeks finalising their preparations for the North East Counties track and field Championships.

Despite the often poor weather, they have achieved a host of personal best performances and numerous medals, ranking the club’s athletes among the region’s elite.

Rachel McHugh is the club’s UK top 10 ranked junior women’s triple jump star. Rachel continues to build towards the summer’s major championships and has recently achieved personal and season best performances, also winning both jump events at the star-studded Cyril Elliott Open meeting at Clairville Stadium in Middlesbrough.

Following Rachel’s lead in the jumps, Courtnie Mills gave a double medal blast in the u15 girls events when achieving a new personal best in both the long jump and triple jump.
Jade Hepple completed the club’s jumps contingent at the meet, leaping to gold in the u13 girl’s long jump final.

Among the club’s female sprinters, Georgia Hirst easily won gold in the u17 women’s 300m final to go to number one in the North East rankings.

Leah Rutherford continued her rapid progression with a double medal haul in the u11 girls 60m and 150m sprint finals.

Rachel Bennett demonstrated her potential when speeding to a silver medal in the u13 girls 75m sprint final.
