Shildon Veterans Monthly Update

The veterans are considering seeking funding for a memorial poppy fence with personalised poppies.

It’ll be another curry day at the next meeting of the veterans, from 11am until 2pm on Wednesday 19 March at the Resthouse in Hackworth Park, writes Glenn Gibson.

Wellbeing for Life will be returning to provide a different fantastic flavour – it was Bhuna last month. This will be alongside the regular donations from Shildon Alive who continue to support this gathering of veterans.

February’s meeting was few in numbers again, receiving apologies from several who were unable to attend. However, it was great to welcome back those who had been absent for a while and who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the banter and food.

There was a major change in the Resthouse last month, with the large conference table dismantled and stored away so that the other tables could be spaced to make it roomier for everyone.

And with the warmer weather slowly creeping back, most are looking forward to sitting out on the veranda and enjoying the view over the park. Maybe the chess board may make an appearance or even a deck of cards for those attending.

There was a short talk about the deactivated weapons from the American Civil War in February and hopefully in March some military memorabilia will be on display for everyone attending to discuss and reminisce and hopefully some funny stories relating to items.

Moving forward, a project was discussed with those present and everyone thought it was a good idea to either source funding or indeed fund raise for a poppy memorial fence next to the flagpole and plinth at the Archway on Main Street similar to the picture above. Obviously, this would be subject to council approval to place it on their land or wall.

It would be intended that families could purchase an approved poppy with the information of a local veteran who has sadly passed away, inscribed and placed on the fence as an act of remembrance.

Veterans are also reminded that the Masonic Hall veterans breakfast club is up and running and meets each month on a Saturday. Look out for their posters and advertising.

Also, the Shildon Branch, Royal British Legion takes place on the second Tuesday of month from 7pm in the Institute.

May I personally thank the gentleman who came last month and donated a book and a box of biscuits for the raffle.

I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name, but your generosity was greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, due to low numbers the raffle didn’t take place in February, but the donation has been put aside. Thank you.

Continued thanks as always to Shildon Town Council, Shildon Alive & Health Express and to those veterans who attend and enjoy the craic.
