Shildon Running Club update

Shildon members were proud to see Kate Avery return to action in the UK this June and she underlined her fine form in a 5000m race in Sport City, Manchester.

Kate recorded a pb for the distance and promptly went to number 6 on the senior women’s UK rankings.

Kate returned to action in the UK European u23 trials in Bedford on Sunday 16th June and not only won the 5000m, but recorded a championship best performance into the bargain.

Cameron Boyek has also impressed this week when competing at the regional BMC meeting at Maiden Castle.

Cameron won the 1500m “A” race in 3m 47.7s for a sb performance.

Michael Bleasby also competed at the BMC and recorded a personal best of 3m 59.5s in the “B” race.

Other Shildon runners participated in the inaugural Durham Coastal half marathon and Liz Woods was among those enjoying the fine scenery provided en route.

Younger members also enjoyed the Newton Aycliffe 3k fun run with Ethan Edwards finishing 1st male and Chloe Fairclough 2nd female.

U11 girl Leah Rutherford was in action at Whitley Bay in the Notan Quad kids event and she certainly showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals in the 75m. Sprinting to victory in 11.0s, Leah’s time now ranks her second in the UK in her age group.

Meanwhile, a blustery Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough, was the venue for the club’s elite youngsters to take on the best schools athletes that Northumberland, Cleveland, Durham and Cumbria could muster in the Schools Inter Counties Championships.

In the face of strong winds, the athletes fought well with Michael Bleasby running a solid 1500m in the senior boys to take a comfortable victory.

Georgia Hirst came in a clear 2nd in the intermediate girls 300m.

Amy Etherington fought hard to take 3rd in the senior girls 1500m.

Josh Mclay found the going tough in the Junior boys long jump but still placed 3rd before helping the Durham 4x100m relay team to 1st place.

Ciara Hughes enjoyed the competition placing 8th in the junior girls 100m and anchoring the 4x100m relay team to victory.

Finally, club runners participated in the town’s 5k Hackworth Park run which takes place at 9am each Saturday. David Johnstone and Chris Griffiths crossed the line in overall 5th and 8th place.
