Long-time Shildon resident Olga Bainbridge was shown the highest respect last week in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
Awarded the British Empire Medal for her work in serving others, Olga attributes her years of commitment as really being about her faith.
Involved in the work of the NSPCC for 39 years, she describes herself as passionate about protecting abused children.
Her work with children didn’t stop there, she is a governor of Saint John’s CofE (Aided) Primary school, serving on the board through the difficult years as the school travelled from failing to the outstanding school it remains today.
Actively involved in the life of Saint John’s Church in a variety of roles, Olga sits on the Parochial Church Council, and more recently joined the ranks of the volunteers working for Shildon Alive.
With a nursing career spanning 35 years, readers may be forgiven for thinking that Olga has done her bit. However she has also served as a magistrate for 27 years, serving in the area of children and families, supporting the most vulnerable in our society.
