Bell ringers celebrate Magna Carta

Residents might be forgiven for thinking that there was also a wedding at Saint John’s Church on Sunday afternoon, 14th June, as the bells pealed out across the town.

However this wasn’t a peal just for Shildon but part of a national event as bells rang across the country to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

Scholars tell us that this signing was where British democracy first began, and 800 years later Shildon’s young people were proudly ringing out the changes in celebration.
