Shildon Railway CC 1st XI ended their season on a high with a commanding 8-wicket victory over Middlesbrough CC 2nd XI.
After winning the toss, Shildon elected to field first. The decision paid off quickly, with opening bowlers applying pressure from the outset.
Middlesbrough’s inn-ings never really settled and wickets fell at regular intervals.
The standout performance came from spinner Nevison, who produced a devastating spell of bowling to claim five wickets for just 30 runs, tearing through the visitors’ middle order.
He was well supported by overseas amateur McKendry, who returns to Australia having taken 78 wickets and scored 760 runs – a fantastic return, and Stephen Forster, who both picked up two wickets apiece.
Middlesbrough were eventually bowled out for 126 in 33.1 overs.
In reply, Shildon’s batting line-up made light work of the chase.
Despite the early loss of two wickets, Jacob Dinger steadied the innings with a composed 39 not out off 35 balls, while Upton provided the fireworks at the other end, blasting 34 not out from just 17 deliveries.
Their unbeaten partnership ensured Shildon cruised to 129 for 2 in just 16.2 overs, sealing an emphatic win.
The result secured 20 league points for Shildon Railway CC, meaning despite some mid-season troubles, the team finished third in the league, just outside of the two promotion places, but alongside the 100 Cup win at the end of August.
Shildon Railway’s 2nd XI fought admirably but ultimately fell short in their match against Middleton St George.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Shildon posted a competitive total of 153, dismissed in 28.4 overs.
In reply, Middleton St George chased the target in 23.1 overs for the loss of 7 wickets, clinching victory by just 3 wickets.
There were encouraging performances from Shildon both with the bat and ball, earning them a total of 7 points (4 for batting, 3 for bowling), but it wasn’t enough to prevent a result slipping away.
Credit to the lads for showing fight as they have done throughout the season, it gives the club plenty to build on for next season going into the 2nd Division.
