A man who allegedly barricaded himself inside a loft and engaged in a five-hour stand-off with police in Shildon has been charged.
Paul Anthony Kailofer is believed to have entered an Auckland Terrace property at around 3pm on Wednesday armed with a knife, and later climbed onto the roof.
Armed officers and trained negotiators are said to have engaged with the 28-year-old, of Dalton Crescent, Shildon, for several hours before he surrendered to police.
He was arrested and taken into custody where he was charged with criminal damage, threats to cause criminal damage, and possession of a knife.
Appearing at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court on 29 December, Kailofer entered no pleas and was remanded to appear at Crown Court this month.
Officers from Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Police team held a ‘Pop Up PACT’ meeting in the area after the incident to offer reassurance to local residents and address their concerns.
In a post on the Shildon Police Facebook page, officers also thanked John at JCS Exterior maintenance and Waste Removals, saying John “has done an amazing job in repairing the damage to the roof at this address.
“You are a star and the victim is absolutely made up that you would do this to help a stranger.
“The true definition of Community Spirit.”
