Ferryhill notched up another victory with a resounding 7-1 win over Washington Athletic on Saturday, reports Chris Orton. The hosts were the dominant team throughout and made a good contribution to their goal difference for the season.
From the off Ferryhill took the initiative with Kieron Richardson first shooting wide and then firing over the bar before David Gibson almost scored from a free kick. Athletic pressed constantly and although Washington looked a better team than the last time the sides met, they were unable to match the hosts in any department. Kieron McWaters turned in a good performance, calmly controlling things from midfield.
On the half hour the deadlock was broken when Reece Wilkinson scored a belter of a goal that left the keeper with no chance. Jay Roddam went close near half-time, and new signing Reed Molloy made his debut following an injury to Kyle Quinn. Kieron Richardson added to his impressive tally for the season to make it 2-0 not long before the ref blew for the end of the half.
As with last week, the majority of the goals came in the second half. The first came from an odd Washington goal that didn’t look as if it was supposed to be a shot. Man of the moment, David Gibson extended the home lead with another unstoppable shot. Next up was a strike from Alex Quinn, who converted an expertly-delivered corner. Richardson shot wide before getting the fifth of the game, and Chris Devine had a great shot palmed over the bar by the visiting keeper. Adam Morland made it six when he tapped in following a great pass from Molloy.
Washington were fading by now and after Richardson headed over, Morland struck with a clinical finish to make it seven. Athletic looked confident, determined and sure of themselves throughout, and Washington were unable to get very near either Jacob Crowle or Luke Teare in the Athletic goal. Kieron McWaters was Man of the Match.
Next up for Athletic is a game away from home against Darlington FC U23s in the Clem Smith Bowl quarter final.
