Having already won the SG Petch Darlington District Cricket League Division C Cup, Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s reformed 2nd team has reached its second final of the season, reports John Brennan.
On a rain interrupted Tuesday evening at SecuriCorp Park, Shildon won the toss and put visitors Cockerton into bat. Shane Rowley (3 for 16), Matty Franklin (2 for 13) and Tyler Claydon (2 for 27) restricted the innings to 105 for 9 from the 20 overs. Replying, the Railwaymen raced to victory in the 14th over. Ash Raine (22), Nathan Lawson (28 not out) and Shane Rowley (29) booked Shildon’s place in the final of the F.B. Howell Trophy, which will be played at Cockerton, on Wednesday 2 August, against Haughton.
In the NYSD 100, Shildon’s 1st XI visited local rivals Newton Aycliffe and grasped victory from the jaws of defeat, thanks to their two Aussies. The hosts won the toss and batted, taking their score to 117 for 5 with Jacob Dinger taking an impressive 2 for 6 from his 20 balls and Ryan Nangle assisting with a very tight spell of 0 for 14 from his 20 balls. Shildon’s reply was soon in trouble at 23 for 3 from 28 balls but then the men from down under took control. Dinger (67 not out from 40 balls) and Nangle (42 not out from 34 balls) saw the Railwaymen safely home at 121 for 3 from 96 balls.
Saturday’s 2nd team home game against King James in the SG Petch Darlington & District Division C fell victim to the weather, but the 1st team travelled through the thundery showers to Marton where the Railwaymen won the toss and elected to field. After a delayed start, the home side were soon in trouble at 46 for 3, but recovered slightly and by the 31st over the score was 119 for 7 (Joe Knowles 3 for 28). However, further heavy rain put an end to the game. Shildon’s nine points keeps them in 5th place in Division 2.
On Sunday, the Railwaymen’s 3rd team entertained Cliffe in a 30 over friendly at SecuriCorp Park. Shildon were all out for 155, Matthew Summerbell top scoring with 37. Shildon used nine bowlers as Cliffe squeezed home in the final over on 156 for 9.
This Saturday, 22 July, the 1st team is at home to second placed Hartlepool and the following day are at home to Newton Aycliffe, who are one place below Shildon. Both these fixtures are in the North Yorks & South Durham Premier Cricket League Division 2. The 2nd team is away to Barton on Saturday in Division C of the Darlington District Cricket League, and as the Crier goes to press, they entertain Barton in the quarter final of the Fenwick Cup.
