1st Shildon BP Scout Group at Hexham Abbey to celebrate their patron saint on St George’s Day.

Five scout troops, including 1st Shildon, filled Hexham Abbey last month to mark St George’s day.

Parading into the abbey, the children, ranging from 5 to 18 years of age, and their leaders, made a special tribute to St George as he is also the scouting patron saint.

Marking the event the speaker explained to the huge congregation how the scouting movent tries to follow his values and perseverance.

As well as Shildon, troops attended from Wooler, Castleside, Aycliffe Heighington and North Ormesby with two scouts coming all the way from Scotland to join in the parade.

Shildon scout leader, Beverly Watkins was so proud of everyone: “They were so well behaved during the service,” she said, “and marched with dignity certainly making Shildon proud.”

1st Shildon BP Scout Group, including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts meet at Shildon Methodist Church Hall on a Tuesday night from 6.15-8pm during term time.
