Children from a local primary school have been involved in a flower bed planting project to show support for the England football team in this year’s World Cup competition, which is taking place in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America.
The group of pupils from Middlestone Moor Primary Academy joined staff of Durham County Council’s Clean and Green, Country Durham Civic Pride and Spennymoor Division County Councillor (Cllr), Pete Molloy, on Tuesday, 16 June, at the Grayson Road flower bed in Middlestone Moor, to plant flowers in the design of the St. George’s Cross.
The project came about when England qualified for the World Cup earlier this year and Cllr Molloy contacted Clean and Green to ask if they could come up with a design to show the town’s support for the men’s national team, which would also bring in the Civic Pride team to liaise with the school.
The children very much enjoyed being involved with the project and in an email to Cllr Molloy from the school’s Teaching Assistant there was a message from from the children, which said, “We go to a gardening club as a way of relaxing and find it very calming as well as having fun while gaining knowledge.
“When we found out about the flower bed planting just along the road, we thought it was a fantastic opportunity, and we were so excited to help plant the flowers in the flower beds in our local community and we can’t wait to show our friends and family.”
Speaking about the project, Cllr Molloy said, “It was good to have pupils from Middlestone Moor Primary Academy involved again in this project to show our support for the England football team and I would like to thank them and the school for being involved.
“I would also like to thank DCC’s Civic Pride team and Clean & Green for their support in delivering the project and getting the local school involved.”
