Historical Displays open at St John the Evangelist Church

Historical Displays open at St John the Evangelist Church, Kirk Merrington 8th November.

Some of the parishioners at St John The Evangelist Church in Kirk Merrington have been investigating the history of the church and summarising their findings on display boards in the transept, writes Sarah Brandon.

They have also made little notices to explain features such as the ‘font’, the ‘priest’s door’, the Cosin’s screen etc. so that visitors can understand our 1850s building in its much older historical context. Our Parish Registers go back to 1578 and are held at the Durham Archives at ‘The Story’.

If people have old pictures of the church, particularly inside, and particularly with people in the picture, we would love to see them. Were you or your relatives baptised or married at St John’s? Please put names, dates and return address on the back of the photos.

We hope to open the church regularly, the first time being after our moving Remembrance Day Service which is at 11am on Sunday 8th November. The names of the fallen soldiers from Kirk Merrington will be read followed by an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial.

The church will remain open until 4pm so that people can enjoy the displays explaining our church’s interesting history. Light refreshments will be served.  Do come and have a look!
