Running club season closes

Shildon’s young athletes ended the track and field season the way it began: with personal best performances!

Gateshead Stadium provided the venue for the annually held Tartan Games and in the fine conditions Rachel Bennett underlined her potential for future seasons with a powerful performance in the heats of the u13g 100m.

Rachel won her heat in a time of 13.66s and would be joined in the final by Maddie Wells, another sprint star with huge potential.

Maddie also placed 1st in her heat in a time of 13.98s.

In the final itself Rachel and Maddie again recorded sub 14s 100m times when placing 2nd and 3rd, excellent performances for girls with another year in the age group still to come! Maddie (29.5s) and Rachel (30.6s) then completed their long season in the 200m with both girls recording times just outside of their pb’s which placed them both 3rd in their respective heats.

Meanwhile another u13g, Jade Hepple was competing in the 70m hurdles and long jump where she achieved two 6th place finishes.

The u11g also gave notice of their progression with Leah Rutherford finishing 4th in the 60m final (9.5s) and Chloe Fairclough recording a new pb of 10.25s which placed her 3rd in the 60m heats.

In the 600m Chloe ran a fine race to finish 5th in a packed field in 2.08:9s (pb).

Following Chloe home in 7th place (2.13:6s), Leah also ran well to achieve a pb.

Over in the u15g Ciara Hughes gave an excellent account of herself in both the 100m and 200m, to round off what has been another positive season of progression in an extremally competitive age group.

Competing from the lower end of the age group, Ciara finished just outside of the medals in both events placing 5th in a tight scrap for the medals in the 100m final and an unlucky 4th in the 200m final after lowering her pb in both the heat and final.

Courtnie Mills completed Shildon’s list of athletes in action when returning from injury for a run out in the u15g 100m. Courtnie shook off the rust to finish 3rd in her heat in a time of 13.73s.
