The Royal British Legion Shildon Branch reports that it has been undertaking a phase of revitalisation in light of increasingly challenging and difficult times.
With rising costs of living and ever reducing availability of key public services generally, the Legion’s services to its serving and ex-serving armed forced community are becoming increasingly important.
The branch has made arrangements to hold its future meetings and monthly social gatherings at the Shildon Railway Institute at 78 Redworth Road.
Branch Chairman, Glenn Gibson said: “Going forward, we’ll be having an informal social gathering on the second Tuesday of every month in the lounge at the Railway Institute from 8pm.
“It’s an opportunity for a friendly chat, sharing stories and ideas over cheese biscuits and pickles.
“Anyone is welcome, even if they are just curious about the Royal British Legion and what we do.
“You don’t have to be a current member, but we’d particularly like to extend the social invitation to all segments of the serving or ex-serving armed forces community and their families.
“The branch is also keen to welcome new members from, or interested in supporting, our armed forces community.”
The easiest way to join is to complete an online application at www.britishlegion.org.uk although, for those without the internet, you can speak to a current member of the branch committee at a monthly social evening and they will be able to help.
The branch has also created a social media presence through a dedicated Facebook page as a way for anyone interested in Royal British Legion activities locally to keep up to date.
The branch is also planning a number of events and excursions in the coming months, some of which will be part of its plan to build funds to carry out charitable aims in the community.
It intends to announce the first of these in the coming weeks, and the branch committee hope that the town and surrounding area will support these endeavours.
In the meantime, they would love to hear from individuals or local businesses interested in supporting the branch or serving and ex-serving forces personnel.
