Bishop Auckland Rotary Club kicked off its Centenary Celebrations with dinner and music at Bishop Auckland Golf Club. Guest of Honour was Sue Snowdon, the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, who highlighted 23 May 1924 as the date when the club received its charter.
The very first Rotary Club was formed by a lawyer, Paul Harris, in Chicago USA in 1905. The first English Club was established in London in 1912 and Bishop Auckland Rotary Club was founded twelve years later.
The founder members of Bishop Auckland Club thought it was important to bring like-minded individuals together to provide humanitarian services to people in need at local, national and international level. The idea of ‘Service above Self’ is just as important now as it was to the founder members 100 years ago.
Current President, Graham Barsby thanked the Lord Lieutenant for her encouraging speech and for the support she has given to Bishop Auckland Rotary over the years.
The club’s Centenary Committee will be organising a variety of events throughout the coming year with Rotarians David Aimer and John Yeomans having produced a Centenary Booklet which was issued to the attendees at the Centenary Dinner.
