Restaurant burglar charged

PCSO Jordan Bayles with Santinni staff and owner, Kerry Varan.

On Sunday, 12 January, police were alerted to a burglary at an Italian restaurant on Main Street in Shildon.

The caller reported seeing a balaclava clad suspect on CCTV inside the bar area of the premises.

The force control room swiftly dispatched mobile officers to the area. Meanwhile, local PCSO Jordan Bayles drove to the back of the restaurant and spotted the suspect running away.

PCSO Bayles chased him through a residential area and eventually caught and detained the runner.

Additional officers arrived and arrested a man in his 30’s in connection with the incident.

Dwayne Myers, of George Street, Shildon has since been charged with burglary and recalled to prison.

Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Inspector Sarah Honeyman said: “Neighbourhood policing is at the heart of everything we do, it’s about protecting communities and businesses from harm and ensuring they have confidence in the way we police.

“Jordan always goes above and beyond his role as a PCSO, having recently been recognised by the Security Minister for helping save a man who had a seizure on the street. Jordan is not afraid to get stuck in and epitomises the neighbourhood policing values.”

Meanwhile, Durham Constabulary are inthe process of recruiting new PCSO recruits.

“Over the last three years, Durham Constabulary have recruited an additional 200 officers,” said a spokesperson, “most of those new recruits have been put onto the streets of the communities we serve.

“And now we’re recruiting more. We’re excited to let you know that PCSO recruitment is now open.”
