Bishop Auckland Town Council invites residents and visitors to join the annual Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade on Sunday 9 November at the War Memorial in the Market Place.
This important event, held in partnership with the Royal British Legion, the Durham Light Infantry (DLI), the 8th Battalion The Rifles, and Bishop Auckland Parish, provides an opportunity for the community to come together to remember and honour those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor Sam Zair, said: “It is a privilege for our town to once again host the Remembrance service.
“Each year we come together as a community to pay our respects ensures that the sacrifices made by so many are never forgotten, and that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
The Service of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial from 10:50am, with attendees asked to begin assembling from 10:30am.
Before the service, a parade led by the 8th Battalion The Rifles, with participation from members of the DLI and local veterans’ groups will form up at the Newgate Centre from 10:30am before marching to the War Memorial.
Anyone wishing to join the parade is encouraged to register with the Town Council in advance, or may simply arrive by 10:30am to take part.
During the service, wreaths will be laid by representatives of local organisations and community groups in honour of the fallen. Following this, a Service of Remembrance will be held at St Anne’s Church, Market Place, at approximately 11:15am, led by Reverend Matt Keddilty of Bishop Auckland Parish.
All are warmly welcome to attend, lay a wreath, or quietly pay their respects at the memorial. Organisations and individuals are invited to register their attendance with the Town Council, although those who do not register will still have an opportunity to lay their wreath at the end of the service.
