These images may jog memories for a few of our senior readers.
The photographs were sent in by Alan Gillham and show him and his class mates at Dean Bank Boys School in 1950. This was their final term before moving to Broom Cottages Mixed School.
The photographs also show teachers Mr Walker (above) and Mr Wilson (below).
Alan recalls when he was around seventeen years old, in the heyday of the former Ferryhill Athletic, as a fan he travelled to see them play Alton Town in Hampshire in the Amateur Cup.
“When we got off the train,” he recalls, “the first person to greet us on the platform was Mr Wilson! I don’t know if he had gone there to live as I don’t think he would have travelled there to watch the game, but it was a big surprise for us to bump into him there. It made it all the better that we won the game 2-1,” he cheerfully added.
Alan, third from the left in the back row (top photo), is standing next to Barry Jones (second from left), and in later years was best man at his wedding.
Alan recalls the names of most of his school mates, some of whom he sadly recounts are no longer with us, but has invited readers to study the photos and see if they know – or indeed are – any of the faces in the photographs.
