Durham County Council is enlisting the help of some unusual characters to help spread an important eco message. With ‘Recycle Week’ this week, (June 22nd – 28th) Lord of the Bins puppets have been out and about on the council’s road shows spreading the green message.

Gandalf the Garbage and Frodo Bin-Baggins were in Bishop Auckland’s Market Place on Thursday, June 25th, where they offered the public helpful hints on how small lifestyle changes can help make a big environmental difference.

Council Waste Reduction Team Leader, Vicki Burrell, said, “Although the environmental message is being taken to heart by many people you can never have enough help, Gandolf the Garbage and Frodo Bin-Baggins will help us spread the word to our younger residents and also to their parents and grandparents. We can all do our bit and what better way to starts than to visit www.recyclenow.com and make a simple environmentally friendly pledge. Maybe you could have a waste free day or do a bit more recycling. Now is the time to act.”

Portfolio Holder, Councillor Bob Young, says every little helps, “Latest fi gures show that over 260,000 tonnes of household waste is produced in the county each year which equates to approximately ½ tonne per person. Durham County Council is constantly expanding opportunities for residents to waste less and recycle more and the response from the public is great. Together we really are making a difference.”
