Ascension Day was celebrated on 26 May and marked the start of a four-day prayer walk for the Bishops of Durham and Jarrow across the Auckland Deanery. Day one saw the walk take in parts of Spennymoor.
Starting in Bowburn, the walk made its way to King Street Primary School where they met pupils and teachers, with the Right Reverend Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham saying it was one of the “most inspirational” schools he’s visited.
From mid-afternoon the prayer walk carried on to the St Paul’s Centre, Spennymoor where there was a tea dance to keep the walkers’ muscles moving.

A bite to eat at Clem’s Fish Restaurant at teatime was enjoyed by all, before the walkers appropriately ascended to St John’s Kirk Merrington for a service of Holy Communion.
The Bishops of Durham and Jarrow also visited Shildon during their prayer walk.
