Spennymoor Town FC got their new campaign off to a flier when they put three past Chester on the opening day of National League North on Saturday 10 August at the Brewery Field.
An Isaac Fletcher double and a spectacular free kick from Matty Dolan, coupled with a clean sheet against one of the promotion favourites, made for a perfect start to the new campaign.
But a sobering 3-1 defeat on the road at Leamington the following weekend ensured there were early lessons to learn that there are no easy games in this division.
And learn them they did as the Moors recorded their 11th straight win at home, and their second of the new season, when Glen Taylor’s double saw off Southport at the Brewery Field on Tuesday evening.
Graeme Lee’s side have not dropped a single point on home soil since February but were made to work hard for the three points by a confident Southport side who had won their opening two fixtures.
However, two clinical strikes from Taylor proved the difference as Moors responded in positive fashion to that disappointing defeat at Leamington.
Moors travel to Rushall Olympic, who have nothing to show for their opening three games of the season, this Saturday before hosting Brackley Town on bank holiday Monday.
It’s then the first local derby of the season when they visit Darlington on the last day of the month, who have started with two defeats and a draw, before continuing on their travels to Radcliffe on Tuesday 3 September.
