Saturday 28 April saw Jubilee parkrun in Spennymoor celebrating its 100th parkrun with a great turnout of runners, walkers and volunteers, writes event directors, Sue Walker and Carol. There was a party atmosphere with balloons, bunting, hats, music and cake. A great time was had by all.
Jubilee parkrun started in October 2019 and has local park runners and walkers as well as visitors who come from all over the UK and sometimes beyond. It takes place every Saturday morning at 9am. You can run, jog, walk or volunteer. Everyone is welcome. Walkers are not only welcome but encouraged, you’ll never be last as a participant, that’s a role a volunteer does.
Many families join us each week, one of which is Mark Quinn and his two sons. Mark celebrated his 100th parkrun on Saturday, Callum ran his 7th and Roman, aged 5, ran his first parkrun.
Ashleigh first joined us as a volunteer at Jubilee in June last year. She is now a regular volunteer often taking on the role as Run Director and has since taken up running and is now doing the couch to 5k.
Heather, another one of our regular volunteers, joined us when she moved to Spennymoor and has met some great friends whilst volunteering at Jubilee parkrun. She says it’s one of the friendliest parkruns around.
Victoria, another new volunteer and park walker, says that volunteering at Jubilee was one of her first steps back on the road to recovery when she developed really bad anxiety attacks. She goes on to say how friendly and kind everyone at Jubilee parkrun was and they really helped her settle into the area.
Parkrun volunteers also support other community events, such as Spennymoor Gala and local businesses and cultural attractions in the area. We also support local food banks and other good causes when we can! Comments from visitors are universally positive about how well kept and beautiful the park is.
