Shildon AFC Over 40s recently had their presentation ceremony at the Dean Street clubhouse to celebrate an exceptional season that saw them crowned as Division Three league champions, reports Ian Wickins.
Winning the league was a memorable achievement as the team went the whole season without losing a league game, playing 26, winning 24 and drawing two. To cap their impressive performance, they were the only team in the Sunderland and District League’s five divisions to go the full season undefeated.
The only game they lost during the season was in the semi-final of the Divisional Cup when Daniel Plews and Carl Dawson failed to score in a 4-3 penalty shoot out defeat.
Awards were presented by team manager, Mel Douglas and went to:
- Player of the Year, Daniel Chadwick;
- Players’ Player of the Year, shared by Christopher Beckett and Daniel Chadwick;
- Top Goal-scorer, Carl Dawson, with 25 goals.
The club gave a special mention to the support received for the season from Shildon AFC, shirt sponsors Material Fabrics / J&B Recycling and Shildon Town Council. The team is preparing for next season in Division Two and are hoping to be in contention for another promotion.
