The next meeting of the Ferryhill History Society will be on Wednesday 25 September at the Ferryhill Station Working Mens Club.
The meeting, which has a small entry fee of just £2, starts at 7.30pm and the speaker will be Geoff Harrison from the Brancepeth Archive and History Group with his talk Letters to a Soldier.
Following renovation work at Brancepeth Castle, an archivist’s treasure trove was found hidden behind a trapdoor.
Going back to the time when the castle was the regimental headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry, here were such things as instruction booklets, posters and magazines along with cups, bottles and other artefacts.
Most interesting were the twenty or so letters which had been written to soldiers based in the castle.
Written by mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and sweethearts, they paint a wonderful picture of the realities of domestic life in the 1940s Geoff’s talk is based on the content of those letters.
