Shildon Railway Cricket Club is looking forward to the new 2014 season in the Readers Durham Cricket League, which starts with the first team at home to Ryhope on Saturday 26th April. “There’s plenty to do before that first game and we need everyone in the club, at all levels, to help us get set to play,” said Chairman John Brennan.
The club is signed up to the national NatWest CricketForce, in partnership with the ECB, but will now take part one week later than planned, on Saturday 12th April. From 10.30am onwards, throughout the day, the club invites all players and any volunteers to go down to the ground to help with various tasks, including repairing and painting the boundary fence. Any donations of white paint would be gratefully received and can be taken to the ground on the day.
Outdoor net practices will be held on evenings from week commencing Monday 14th April, starting at 6pm at the ground and all players are welcome.
This season the club is running four junior sides at Under 11, 13, 15 and 18 levels and is looking to recruit new players to each age group. On Thursdays 10th and 17th April, indoor practices and taster session, aimed at the Under 11 age group, will be held at the Jubilee Fields Community Centre at 6pm and are free of charge.
Junior players’ registration will take place at these sessions and for seniors, at the club, on Thursday 10th from 7pm. Outdoor practices for juniors are held throughout the season on Fridays at 6pm at the ground, commencing on 25th April.
“We have been in touch with all of our local schools and hope that the children and pupils of the town will support the town’s only cricket club by attending our practices and playing for our teams. We believe that investment in the youngsters is the way forward and will ultimately benefit the club,” added a club spokesman.
