At the 139th Durham Miners’ Gala, Sam Rushworth MP proudly carried the banner honouring the railwaymen of Shildon.

With 2025 marking the 200th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, Dr Rushworth stepped in to ensure the banner was represented at this significant moment in local and national history.

“The Gala is always a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by working people and the solidarity that still binds us,” said Dr Rushworth.

“It was an honour to represent Shildon’s proud railway heritage on such an important day.”

The Gala featured the traditional brass bands, crowd favourites, and a moving speech by Palestinian Ambassador, Dr Husam S Zomlot.

Dr Rushworth, who has met Dr Zomlot in Parliament, praised his “powerful message of peace” and his continued commitment to a two-state solution.

Once again, the Miners’ Gala brought people together in celebration, reflection, and a shared hope for a fairer future.
