Momentum returns with wins for Railwaymen

Veteran striker, Billy Greulich-Smith celebrates one of his five goals scored in the past two games.

A nine-goal haul at home on Saturday, followed by a Billy Greulich-Smith hat-trick in a midweek 0-6 away win provided some much-needed momentum to Shildon AFC’s stalled title chase.

The club may have been playing the league’s two rock-bottom sides, but their scheduling in the fixture calendar could not have come at a more opportune time for Shildon as they looked to ressurect their title chase after an unwelcome series of results.

Two defeats in their previous three outings – including to rivals and league leaders, Bishop Auckland – have seen the Railwaymen fall eight points behind the Two Blues, and also leaves them looking over their shoulder as the promotion play-off race heats up.

Shildon raced to a four-nil lead over Tow Law in the opening half hour at Dean Street on Saturday, before unexpectedly conceding to their doomed visitors.

However, five more in the second half, including two own goals, ensured a 9-1 win, albeit not a large enough win to worry the leaders’ superior goal difference.

Another six on Tuesday evening at Sunderland RCA, including a popular hat-trick for veteran striker Billy Greulich -Smith, ensured the Railwaymen hold on to second spot, four points ahead of West Auckland Town.

Shildon travel to lowly Whickham on Saturday, weather permitting, before hosting Carlisle City, who are battling for a play-off spot themselves, the following weekend.
