Mayor meets Prince Edward

HRH Prince Edward chats to Mayor Cllr David Bell.

On Friday 26 September, Town Mayor, Cllr David Bell was invited to attend a reception marking the start of the anniversary journey featuring the replica of Locomotion No 1.

The Anniversary Journey was the highlight of the S&DR200 Celebrations, commemorating 200 years since the historic opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

It was an honour meeting His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward.

On 27 September 1825, the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives opened, connecting Shildon to Stockton via Darlington—an event that transformed global transport and industry.

This milestone is not only a proud moment in our region’s history, but a legacy of innovation that continues to inspire.

Following the event, Town Mayor, Cllr David Bell also attended the unveiling ceremony of plaques commemorating the anniversary at the site of the original Mason’s Arms, a short walk from the museum.

A great day was had by all.
