Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Councillor Sam Zair, was delighted to present the Bishop Auckland Detachment Army Cadets Force with a donation of much-needed equipment.
The group had applied for the equipment via the Town Council Community Grant Scheme.
Mayor Zair said: “It was great to visit the young people of the army cadets at the TA centre and hand over the donation of a projector, stand, speakers and a much-needed printer on behalf of the Town Council.
“The equipment will really help the group with their training and activities.
“Whilst there, I was honoured to be able to present some of the cadets with achievement awards.
“These young people are our future and are an inspiration. I spoke to one young lady who joined with the aim of enrolling in the army when she leaves school.
“It was fantastic to see how driven she was to reach her goal despite difficult personal circumstances.”
SSI Brian Burn said: “We were honoured to have Mayor Zair attend the detachment to present us with the donation, for which we are very grateful.
“The Army Cadet Force have built a strong relationship with Bishop Auckland Town Council and are proud to take part in the annual Bishop Auckland Remembrance parade each year not only to represent our detachment but to represent the Durham area.
“The army cadets can be challenging for young people, but very rewarding, helping them to build self-confidence and learn new skills.
“It is open to all young people from the age of 12 years old. We help them aim high and the experience of the cadets will stay with them no matter what career they pursue in life.”
Any community group or organisation within Bishop Auckland can an apply for a grant for up to £500 for a project by visiting the Bishop Auckland Town Council website.
Applications can be received at any time but are considered twice a year, usually in June and December.
However, the council will also be considering applications in February of 2024, therefore they recommend that people apply as soon as they can.
