Saturday night at the Frog and Ferret was nothing short of electric as local trio The VCR — Nick (vocals, guitar), Anne (vocals, bass), and Dan (drums) — delivered a set that will be talked about for weeks to come, writes David Auston.
The band’s chemistry, energy, and sheer joy in performing turned the cosy venue into a roaring celebration of live music.
From the first strum, Nick’s guitar showed the vibey, characterful voice of his Maybach, and the room was theirs. His soulful vocals carried each song with power and charisma, perfectly balanced by Anne’s harmonies and driving bass lines. Together, they created a dynamic vocal interplay that gave every track depth and character.
At the back of the stage, Dan’s drumming was rock-solid yet playful, propelling the band forward with irresistible momentum.
The night’s standout moment came with their power driven rendition of With a Little Help from My Friends. Far from a straightforward cover, The VCR transformed it into a stirring communal anthem.
Nick’s voice soared, Anne’s harmonies wrapped around the melody, and Dan’s rhythmic flourishes added urgency — the crowd responded in kind, singing along with hands in the air.
What makes The VCR so compelling is not just their technical ability, but the visible camaraderie between them. They play like three friends who genuinely love sharing music — and that authenticity radiates out into the audience.
By the time their final notes rang out, the cheers made it clear: they hadn’t just played a gig, they’d brought the house down.
