Low Spennymoor and Tudhoe Grange Town Councillor Beckie Calder has recently launched a petition in order to address concerns over road safety and traffic issues on Durham Road.
Cllr Calder said: “I have been contacted by concerned residents worried about the traffic and parking problems on Durham Road and how things might get even worse when the new Springmoor Grange Primary School opens next September.”
“As a mum who lives on Durham Road myself, I share the worries about the dangers speeding cars pose to kids playing on the back streets.
“We need to act before there’s an accident where children are playing or where parking problems stop emergency services reaching somebody in their hour of need.”
The initial response to the petition has been encouraging, says Cllr Calder, with many residents living on Durham Road adding their name to the calls for Durham County Council to take action on this issue.
Durham County Council have responsibility for roads and traffic and the hope is that they will carefully look at the existing issues and potential problems going forward and put measures in place to prioritise safety.
A whole range of potential solutions exist from better enforcement, to reduced speed limits and traffic calming measures such as speed bumps or a traffic light controlled crossing.
Cllr Calder added: “We want the County Council to act before these problems get worse and we need your support to show them how real these concerns are for local residents and those who send their children to school on Durham Road.”
