Dear Editor,

During my year as Mayor, I have experienced many emotions – some good but many unpleasant.

All I have ever done is serve the community of Shildon, representing people and being proud of that. The constant criticism that has been put on social media has had a negative impact on all councillors resulting in several of them not taking up their position this term, which is very disappointing.

I want to pay tribute to all the retiring councillors who have worked so hard in the community within various organisations and to those brave enough to continue serving the community of Shildon. As we all know most of the work we do is voluntary, including being a town Councillor.

Over the last two years I have awarded over 24 great people in this town that have done amazing, selfless acts for others. We have many good people locally and I am so honoured to know every single person.

I would like to thank Glenn, Jordan, and the workforce staff for their continued commitment, in all weathers, keeping our park, cemetery, two closed churchyards, allotments, football pitches and various pieces of land maintained to a high standard.

I also want to pay tribute to Stuart, and the Civic Hall staff for ensuring that the Civic Hall remains a venue of choice for evening meals, Sunday lunches, a quiet drink, quiz night, weddings, christenings, funerals, party celebrations, and not forgetting community use.

On the occasions that I have hosted events, the feedback has always been complimentary and many councils envy what we have in Shildon.

By no means last, I want to thank Tracey, Julie, Laura and Dean for their continued support to us as councillors and for going over and above to sort issues and fill the need for local people that are struggling.

You are all amazing people.

It goes without saying that I want to acknowledge the unconditional support I have had from my husband Peter, daughter Hannah and son-in-law Nathan.

I could never have done as much locally and county wide without them. As a family, I am so proud of them all. All public servants, all willing to help others and all there to support each other.

As I hand over the Mayor’s chain, I wish the new elected Town Mayor, Councillor David Bell, all the very best and hope he enjoys the position and responsibility. Together with his Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Samantha Townsend, I am confident they will continue to keep community spirit alive and learn from other neighbouring councils.

We now have three new County Councillors, again I wish them well and hope that they will continue to support the Town Council and work with us for the continued benefit of all.

Thank you all and God bless.

Yours sincerely,
Councillor Shirley Quinn, Outgoing Town Mayor
