I refer to your most recent issue (Spennymoor News, issue 165) and the details provided by Councillor Maddison.
Specifically, the mention of local residents who have contacted her and asked if she would approach DCC and have them consider installing a pedestrian crossing on the stretch of road between Oxford Road and Holborn Street.
This matter was raised with Highways at the public meeting in Spennymoor Town Hall at a time when Aldi was still in the planning phase.
When the supermarket was finished, absolutely nothing had been done to protect members of the public attempting to cross the road at this point and the dropped kerbs referred to by Cllr Maddison were put in as an afterthought.
Given the expense involved installing an actual pedestrian crossing, I emailed Cllr Maddison on 6 September and suggested she try to persuade Highways to put down zebra markings (only) at the point of one, if not each dropped kerb?
This could, I believe, serve to raise motorists awareness (as it does similarly in Aldi car park) and provide some protection at least to pedestrians.
Would this perhaps not be a sensible compromise for the Highways department?
