Dear Editor,

Over the past few weeks, we have shared information to help everyone keep safe during the summer holidays and now we would just like to remind everyone why it’s really important to keep our streets and open spaces litter free.

Litter is Harmful:

  • One of the biggest problems with littering is how much money it costs to clean up.
  • Litter, especially when it includes discarded food containers creates an ideal breeding ground for rodents.
  • Both people and animals can cut themselves from certain types of litter. Broken glass and sharp objects can cause cuts, punctures, and infections.
  • Illegally dumped rubbish can kill or stunt plant growth.
  • Many small animals crawl into bottles or jars and get stuck and starve to death.
  • Birds, small animals and water creatures eat or get tangled in plastic bags or plastic 6-ring holders.
  • Littered spaces can create a sense of disorder and lack of safety, making many people feel upset and down.
  • People are more likely to litter if they see litter.

So we are asking everyone over the holidays to please use litter bins or take your rubbish home.

We like living in Ferryhill and we want everyone to feel proud of where we live.

If one person litters, it destroys our streets, open spaces and parks.

Let’s look after each other.

Yours sincerely,
Ferryhill Ambassadors for Community Change
