Dear Editor,
I was shocked to read notices on lampposts in Leeholme suggesting that those in government, locally and nationally, have decided that 70 new houses need to be built in Leeholme.
The project has not yet been given planning permission, yet those in power have decided to put forward their proposal to close particular roads in our village so that the housing development will be possible.
It seems to have been decided that the 70-house development will go ahead.
Meanwhile 156 new houses are planned for Coundon. This has also not got planning permission … yet.
Daily I meet people in the villages who are against these new brand new houses. “What about the empty houses?”, “What about the school places?”, “What about the doctor’s surgery?”, “Where are the dentists?” These are among the questions they ask.
The answers can be seen in Bracks Farm and Bishops Park developments. No extra school places or extra school resources. No new doctors employed. No dentists. No community facilities.
When have we been consulted? These lamppost notices appear to be all the consultation that we will get. They have already made up their minds. The consultation process seems a charade.
We need a proper discussion. We need those in ‘power’ to listen and take notice. To that end, I am organising a public meeting on 21st February at Coundon and Leeholme Community Centre, Leeholme Road, Leeholme DL14 8HN. All are welcome to attend.
Yours sincerely,
Lynn O’Neill, Leeholme.
