It was show day at Old Shildon Club on Sunday 14th September, when Barry Woodward won the pot leeks with 225 cubic inches, his second win of the season.
Gary Richardson was second with 193 and Brian Richardson was third with 202. Gary, in second, won the award for best leek in show.
Brian Walton won the long leek section with 130 and the intermediate with 187. Brian also won the 2 dressed onions, the 2 fresh pulled onions, and the cauliflower. David Snowball won the shallots, the flat bottomed onions, and the tray of veg.
D Redfern won the parsnips and long carrots, and G Parry the stump carrots. In the flower section, Joe Peers won the vase of blooms, T Hogg won the incurve, the reflex and the intermediate chrysanthemums, and J Howard the sprays. Philip Watson gained first prize in the small decs, the medium cactus and the 3 vases of dahlias. The medium decs and small cactus was won by G Hodgson. The giant dahlia by B Hutchinson and the 3 vases of chrysanthemums by G Parsons.
The King Willy show was this year held at the Fox and Hounds because of the closure of their own pub. Richie Hurst won the leeks with 146 cube, Eric Dowling was second with 87 and Ian Thompson was third with 69.
Eddie Laybourne won most of the stands, winning the shallots, parsnips, flat bottomed onions, the poms, rose and carnation, the vase of blooms, the sprays, decs and cacti. Joss Aldworth won the long leek with 65, the fresh pulled onions, the celery and tomatoes.
