Media Studies students at King James I Academy have enjoyed a fascinating makeup demonstration and workshop which focused on the use of liquid latex to create SFX zombie makeup and film props.
The session was designed to inspire students to think big when planning their own film making and photography projects.
Visiting speaker and makeup artist, Amy Algar specialises in all genres from creative face painting to Halloween makeup and prosthetics.
Students were fascinated by the initial presentation which showed examples of her work, and interested to hear her tips on how to save money by using readily available materials such as cotton wool and tissue as an alternative to specialist equipment which can be expensive for beginners.
They also learned how to make fake blood with glycerin, food colouring and cocoa powder.
In the demonstration, Year 12 Media student, Molly Todd was made into a zombie complete with tooth-filled facial gash, and following this, students were able to try using latex for themselves in a workshop where they made amputated fingers.
Practitioner visits, hands-on learning experiences and educational trips, both national and international, are a big part of student life at King James, and many departments have a full calendar of activities and events to enhance learning throughout the year.
The Academy calendar is also full of special events from fundraising to themed assemblies which are all designed to help students become informed, confident and pro-active members of society.
