Shildon Town Mayor, Cllr Shirley Quinn, had the honour of inviting and presenting the Mayor’s Award for January 2024 to Kim Cleasby.
Kim came to the mayor’s attention for her acts of kindness to others. Kim has worked in care for most of her working life, with Holly Lodge in Shildon one of the facilities she worked in for nearly ten years.
Sadly, 18 months ago, Kim’s mam passed away and she decided she could no longer continue in her caring role.
Instead she decided to become self-employed and opened Mapats on Church Street in memory of her Mam, who was always helping others.
She began by selling Spanish cleaning products and later opened a small cafe to run alongside her business.
Kim quickly had a regular trade, some of which came from people she had cared for and their family members.
She discovered that many felt alone and wanted company more than anything.
She also realised that there were many families that were struggling financially, so she thought of ways in which she could help.
She first put out a plea for prom dresses and suits and donated to 63 young people.
She then went on to ask for donations to make up hampers to give to those in need, especially at Christmas. This led to her making Christmas dinner and with the help of family and friends, a festive meal was delivered to 107 households.
Kim told Mayor Quinn that she enjoyed every minute of this, which has also helped her grieve for her beloved mam.
Mapats has relocated from its original building on Church Street, and is now to be found opposite the Post Office.
Kim said that she will always welcome anyone who wants to come in for a cuppa, a chat and anyone that needs her help.
“These acts of kindness are truly remarkable,” said Mayor Quinn, “and Kim certainly deserved the small award in recognition of her acts. “Thank you, Kim, your mam would be incredibly proud.”
