Last week saw the launch of Shildon’s new digital hub at Jubilee Fields, hailed as a bridge across the digital divide.
With support from Digital Durham and Durham Community Action, Jubilee Fields has managed to secure funds from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which in turn has enabled the centre to buy laptops and tablets, software and an interactive whiteboard to assist the Shildon community.
The launch day saw teams from various supporting organisations helping introduce residents to the new facility.
Livin wanted to help their residents get online by learning how to use the Livin website and Livin app to access support for their housing needs.
Ability Net, Age Concern UK and Durham Ability are offering free training to more mature residents over the age of 65 in basic uses such as how to book GP appointments or to order an online shop and help on how to stay safe from scams.
Pathways to Employment, Learning Curve and Durham Learn wants to offer accredited, recognised qualifications that include English and Maths, Teaching Assistant training, health and social care, business, ICT and digital, first aid and many more courses.
Wellbeing for Life, who already use the centre for menopause talks, well man and well women groups, praised the event and the centre’s outreach efforts to help all residents in the community.
Lesley Bowes, the centre’s Development Coordinator told the Crier that the digital hub represents a step forward for the community: “It will provide a space for learning, innovation and collaboration to bridge the digital divide,” she said.
“Even though there has been lots of changes in the last two years at Jubilee Fields, this is another step forward in making the center sustainable for our future generations.”
And echoing the positive feedback from the launch, Hannah Hanratty, Chair of Trustees of the centre said: “We are committed to making this hub a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, whether you want to come and here to learn, teach or simply explore.
“We hope you find this hub and the Jubilee Centre to be a valuable resource.”
The new hub will be open every Tuesday for residents to use the laptops, printer, wifi, send emails or use the online software.

Courses will be advertised for spring and autumn 2025 once it is understood which courses residents are most interested in.
