John and Marcia win croquet Hi-Lo

Auckland Chilton Croquet Club held its Hi-Lo competition recently, with John and Marcia declared the winners after winning all three of their game. In the Hi-Lo competition all players have a handicap, similar to golf.

The names of all players with low handicaps go into one bag and those with high handicaps go into another. Names are drawn out of each bag to make the pairs.

A fixture list is then drawn so that each pair play every other pair in a round robin. The idea is that the weaker players are assisted and encouraged by the stronger ones.

“As there aren’t that many of us it amounted to eight players all playing three games each,” explained Richard Peck.

“There were actually nine players present but Jane, the club chairperson, kindly offered to run the competition, organising the times, admin, collating scores and so on. The winners were Marcia and John who won all three of their games and deserved their victory.

“They were jointly presented with the Mickey Glenn trophy, named after the founder of the croquet club back in 1998.”

Anyone wanting to have a go at playing croquet can find the club at the Miners Recreation Ground in Chilton on a Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoon from 2pm until around 4pm.

It is free to try at the Miners Recreation Ground, you just need to wear some flat shoes and take along clothing appropriate to the day’s weather forecast.
