With the anniversary date of the Stockton & Darlington Railway approaching and a celebratory weekend lined up, Shildon’s historic Railway Institute is adding to the fun by hosting an open day tournament of indoor games on the afternoon of Sunday 28 September.
A spokesperson for the Institute told us: “We wanted to contribute to the weekend, as of course we were founded and supported by Stockton & Darlington Railway employees all those decades ago.
“We also thought it best to do something weatherproof as we head into Autumn.
“Indoor games were first introduced to the institute in 1860 when a draughts table was obtained.
“Other games as pastimes soon followed as interest grew.
“So we’re going to make a day of it by having competitions in modern favourites, pool, darts and dominoes, as well as bringing back some traditional games from the past, draughts, chess and even shove ha’penny.
“What’s more we’re inviting families to ‘bring a board game’ to the main hall and challenge their friends to a game of whatever they like.
“There will also be an inflatable and disco for families in the hall between 1pm and 3pm.
“It would be great if people would take up the challenge and come along to join in whichever games they prefer.”
Sign-up for the games takes place between noon and 1pm on the day.
As well as Sunday’s fun and games, there will be a chance to pit your wits against the Institute quizmaster on Friday 26th.
The evening will see usual popular quiz format, but with a twist!
Proceedings get underway in the Hackworth Lounge from 8pm.
