Independent Councillor, Liz Maddison has provided an update on recent activities.
The Vibrancy (Circus) event, held on 25 May, was a resounding success, drawing in crowds with its excellent performers and a variety of activities for youngsters. Local businesses showed their support by providing refreshments, contributing to the festive atmosphere. The event was well-advertised locally, and the hope is to make it an annual event, a staple in the community’s calendar.
Other events are also in the pipeline, including the Spennymoor Gala and Brass Festival on 6 and 8 July respectively, and a specialist market event, the date of which is yet to be confirmed. These events are part of a broader initiative to foster community spirit and provide entertainment for residents.
Funding has been provided to Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group for sound equipment, supporting their outdoor events and entertainment. This funding is part of a larger effort to encourage youth participation and engagement in the community. Additionally, funding has been allocated towards a Junior Parkrun and a second ‘Youth Festival’, further demonstrating the commitment to youth engagement.
Pathway improvements are being funded at the exit of the Auckland Way at Byers Green, with new signage and information boards being installed along the route. Surface improvements are also being made to encourage more walkers and cyclists to use this route, promoting healthier lifestyles and a more active community.
Flytipping has been reported at various locations, with fines now up to £1000. This is part of a broader effort to maintain cleanliness and order in the community.
Graffiti has been cleaned off at several locations, and the police are investigating air rifle use in the Nature Reserve.
Potholes have been reported and repaired across both Divisions, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to infrastructure maintenance.
£2.5m funding will be used to improve the A690 and A167 roads, enhancing connectivity and easing transportation.
Some roads and pathways in the town are in poor repair due to repeated digging and patching. Recent highways funding is hoped to improve these roads, ensuring safer and smoother journeys for residents.
Signs have been requested to warn of wild deer on Whitworth Road, which will be the main route for construction traffic to a recently approved development. This is part of a broader initiative to ensure road safety and protect local wildlife.
At the County Planning Committee, a planning application for 187 houses off Whitworth Road was approved, despite opposition. This decision underscores the ongoing development and growth in the area.
The Barratts snagging list is making good progress, with adoption expected late summer. Demolition of the Cheapside end of Festival Walk is progressing, paving the way for new developments.
Public Consultation on new projects for the £20m ends on 31st May.
The second Towns Board Meeting is scheduled for this week, providing an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions and concerns. This is part of the ongoing commitment to transparency and public participation in decision-making processes.
