Shildon Railway Institute will host the sale of several hundred quality hardback books after a local resident donated some of his vast collection in aid of the Shildon Mining Memorial Fund.
Retired English teacher and former local town councillor, Fred Langley, said: “I have donated the books to the fund for obtaining a suitable permanent memorial to the former miners, many of whom died or were seriously injured, and without whom Shildon would not be the town that it is today.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Railway Institute, who have waived hire costs for what they agree is a worthy cause, all monies received will go to the fund.
“The books include fiction, non-fiction, travel, motor repair, history, politics, comic hardback and more.
“All books will cost just £1 each, so come along, grab a bargain, something to detract from too much mundane TV or a distinctive Christmas stocking filler and support this worthy cause.
“A monument to the brave miners of Shildon is well overdue.”
The book sale will take place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December from 11am until 4.30pm each day.
