A new independent family-run bakery has opened its doors on Fore Bondgate in Bishop Auckland, writes Yvonne Hawkey.
Village Cakery, run by local couple Andy Hope and Bradley Skeen, welcomed its first customers on Good Friday, April 3, after relocating from their home-based business in Cockfield.
The shop marks a major step for the pair, who launched the business in 2024 and built a following through celebration cakes and regional market stalls.
After securing the premises in early March, the couple spent several weeks preparing the space, which is light and airy and very welcoming, showcasing a wide range of delicious cakes and baked goods.
Andy said opening a shop had always been the goal, adding: “We’re proud to be based in Bishop Auckland, it’s our home town, we were born and bred here.
“We really want to be part of the local community and help bring more life to the high street.”
Village Cakery plans to expand its offering in the coming months, with ideas including home delivery, social media sales, cookery demonstrations and future baking classes.
