Hetton completed a league and cup double over Ferryhill Athletic on Saturday as they ran out 2-1 winners at Dean Bank in a closely contested game, reports Fraser Reynolds.
Ferryhill started the brightest with the Hetton goalkeeper Chappel tipping a shot from Richardson over the bar. The Athletic continued to dominate but against the run of play the visitors went ahead when Smith was given too much time and room and he gave Carr no chance with a well placed shot.
The second half followed the same pattern, with the Athletic were thwarted by a dogged Hetton defence who crowded them out and offered very little space. On 75 minutes, Ferryhill deservedly drew level when Richardson burst through to slot home.
The last ten minutes saw play swing from end to end and the Latics best chance fell to Morland, who was set up by Agar, but his shot from six yards out was straight at the Hetton keeper who had been inspired throughout pulling off several good saves. The visitors claimed all three points near the end when Johnson broke through and calmly picked his spot.
Manager Lee Jewett said:โWe deserved to get something out of the game, our lads gave 100 per cent but today their keeper was in outstanding form. We have to pick ourselves up and learn from this as there is a long way to go until the end of the season.โ
Ferryhill donโt have a match on Saturday. Next up will be Saturday 7 October when they entertain Windscale in the Shipowners Cup. Kick off is 2.30pm at Dean Bank.
