The Bishop Auckland branch of the Durham Light Infantry are trying to raise £1640 in order to repair the World War 1 Memorial at St. Andrew’s Church in Bishop Auckland.
“County Durham has a long military history and many residents in and around Bishop Auckland have friends or relatives who have served in the Armed Forces,” says their secretary George Campbell.
“Remembrance Sunday is an important day in the veterans’ calendar, as many of us come together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
“As you can see from the photograph, the memorial is covered in moss and some of the inscriptions need to be repaired.
“The Memorial was built in 1920 by the people of Bishop Auckland in recognition of the local men who gave their lives in the First World War.
“The money for the monument was raised by public subscription.”
The memorial is a saxon cross which stands seventeen feet tall and weighs 7.5 tons. It was designed and erected by Messrs W Allison and Sons.
George added: “As the cost of the memorial was funded by contributions from the people of Bishop Auckland, I am hoping they will be as generous again to bring the memorial back to it’s former glory.”
