On Friday 20th September, the 2013 County Durham Sports and Physical Activity Awards were held at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.
Athena Sports Academy, which is based in Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre and Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, was nominated for several major awards for the County Durham area. One of the founding members of Athena, coach Samantha Robson, came away with the Coach of the Year for the Sedgefield Area. Athena was also Awarded Junior Sports Club of the Year for the Sedgefield Area.
A spokesperson for the club commented, “This is a great achievement for the Academy, not only receiving these awards, but for the success that the gymnasts have also had within the first two years
of it’s life.”
The Academy won’t be able to rest on their laurels for long as coaches and gymnasts are currently preparing two routines for Gymfusion 2013, which takes place in Newcastle in November.
The Academy offers recreation classes from 3 years and above, as well as classes in acrobatic gymnastics and tumbling.
