Greggs planning approval

Greggs to open new store in Bishop Auckland after planning approved.

Bakery chain Greggs is to open a new store in Bishop Auckland town centre, writes Local Democracy Reporter, Bill Edgar.

The North East-based company has received planning permission to move into a vacant shop at 19 Newgate Street.

The town’s current Greggs store in the Newgate Shopping Centre is set to close once the new branch opens.

Durham County Council granted planning permission this week, with work on the site to commence in due course.

Proposed opening hours for the new store are 6.30am to 7.30pm from Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 5pm on Sundays. A small indoor seating area will also be provided, allowing customers the chance to eat in.

“The proposed Greggs’ bakery is considered to offer a beneficial service to residents and visitors, providing an accessible, attractive and affordable bakery offer,” a planning statement read.

The vacant unit in Bishop Auckland town centre previously housed The Gaming Hideaway.

The planning statement added: “Greggs currently operates from Unit 2 of the Newgate Shopping Centre. That leasehold is due to be relinquished, and the business intends to relocate into the application premises at Newgate. This ensures Greggs maintains a presence within Bishop Auckland town centre, contributing to the vitality and viability of the centre.

“The proposed reoccupation by Greggs would deliver economic benefits through investment into the town centre, creation and retention of jobs, and supporting footfall generation.

“The proposals have been carefully designed to ensure that the new shopfront and advertisements preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
