Shildon AFC‘s game at home to Dunston UTS on Wednesday 18th December was abandoned at half time because of a waterlogged field. Before the game it was raining, not too heavily, but when the match kicked-off the heavens opened and it turned into a torrential downpour, made even worse by heavy winds. These conditions continued throughout the whole of the first half.
Shildon got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the 1st minute when a long ball from Sam Hodgson found Paul Connor and he turned his man and scored another one of his special goals. Shortly after, Connor was put through twice more, but one shot went wide and the other one was blocked by keeper Liam Connell.
It was 2 – 0 on 27 minutes when a left cross was sidefooted in by Ben Wood.
Ten minutes later it was 2 -1 when a high cross from the left should have been easily handled by keeper Lewis Graham, but the wind caused the ball to slip out of his hands into the net.
It was 2 – 1 at half time, but after a pitch inspection by the referee during the break, he called the game off as the field was saturated with surface water.
