On the 3rd Sunday of the ‘even’ months, St John’s, St Bart’s, St David’s and St Peter’s parishioners get together for a walk, writes Sarah Brandon. We know each other much better since starting to do this a couple of years ago. People come when they can and new people join in all the time.

We had a delightful afternoon for our August walk. Eleven of us set off from Hett and strolled through the countryside. The picture is taken outside the hay-barn on the Croxdale Hall estate. The hay-barn has arched stone doorways and is thought to pre-date 1815. There are two levels to it, and it is believed that hay would have been stored on the upper level, while animals were kept from the elements in the lower level. Art historian Nicholas Pevsner was unusually impressed with it and described it as ‘one of the best agricultural buildings in the county’.

We meandered through the parkland, and pastureland and along the road completing the circuit and finishing up at Anne’s house. There, we enjoyed tea and cakes, in very special surroundings. It was a very interesting and pleasurable afternoon.

Our next walk will take place on the 18 October at 2pm. We will meet outside St David’s Church in Tudhoe. All are welcome.
